notes: The bootleg 'T.G.I.F.' lists the show as this date, but is in fact 6 November 1981, although this show did take place, as confirmed by the poster.
About the venue itself, from an interview by David Fricke with Peter Buck on 15 November 1990 taken from The Rolling Stone Files book (pg. 114): "There was a place in Greensboro, North Carolina, called Friday's. It was a pizza parlor, and the guy had bands play. It was an L-shaped room; you could see through the bar to the ovens, with the guy with the long stick with pizzas on it, and see us, too. He'd charge a dollar, we'd get 150 people in there, and we'd get the door. People would let us sleep on the floor. There were clubs like that in every city"

It is currently thought to be on 13 March 1981, however some more investigating it taking place to determine the true date and venue. There is no dispute however that this show took place, just not the recording is of this show.

encore: White Tornado
notes: This show was originally thought to have been from 10 January 1981, but has been attributed to this date instead because:
1. At the end of Get On Their Way at the 30 Jan 81 show, Stipe says that was the first time they've played that - and sounds very basic as well - they called it Get On Back Home - therefore it is an older set than the 30 Jan show.
2. The setlist is virtually identical to the 2 April setlist - it is easy to get the numbers wrong - 1/10//81 v 4/10/81.
This show can be found on the vinyl bootlegs "Georgia Peaches - Ripe!", as well as an edited version on "So Much Younger Then". The double CD bootleg "Tyrone's Athens 1981" also features the show, minus Rave On and White Tornado. 'Burning Down' comes after 'Action' on these bootlegs, however a new recording has been unearthed where Burning Down appears to have been played after Rave On instead. After hearing the new version, it's now my view Burning Down should be second in the setlist, and not after Action.

15 April 1981 - Drive-In Studio, Winston-Salem, NC
tracks recorded: Sitting Still / Sitting Still (incomplete fast version) / Radio Free Europe / White Tornado (1) / White Tornado (2)
notes: First recording session with Mitch Easter. These tracks were recorded for R.E.M.'s Cassette Set audio tape, to be sent out to clubs, magazines, and record companies. The Cassette Set features 'Sitting Still', 'Radio Free Europe' and 'White Tornado' (2). Also on the cassette are small clips of the fast version of 'Sitting Still', and the first take of White Tornado, which is halted half way through due to some wrong notes by Peter Buck. About 400 copies of the set were produced

23 April 1981 - Drive-In Studio, Winston-Salem, NC
notes: Mitch Easter remixes 'Radio Free Europe' from 15 April, creating 'Radio Free Europe (Dub Mix)'. The mix made it onto some copies of the Cassette Set, and also the LP bootleg 'Smokin' In The Boys Room', and CD bootlegs 'Rave On', and 'Essential Demos Vol. 1'

The guy said he'd feed us, he gave us a box of Kentucky Fried Chicken that he'd sat under a drip in the ceiling so that it was covered in water; we lost $150 because we drank, and we didn't realise he was charging us for drinks; I got in a fight with a skinhead outside in the parking lot; and we got lost for four hours in Brooklyn before the show" - from It Crawled From The South, Marcus Gray (first edition, pg.43)

notes: This show can be found on the CD bootleg 'T.G.I.F', minus Stumble and Carnival Of Sorts. The bootleg lists the date as 31 March 1981, but is in fact this date. 'Ha (We Get Paid For It) is the arbitrary title of this song, it's unknown what the true intended title was, as it was quickly dropped from the set and wasn't recorded in the studio

notes: Set 1 is incomplete, as the person who taped the show got there late. For those with a copy of the show, Gardening At Night is cut off due to the taper accidentally recording over the end of REM's set with another artist, hence set 2 being incomplete as well. It's fairly safe to assume 9-9 and Windout would have followed, with Radio Free Europe or Skank likely to end the set

23 November 1981 - Off The Wall Hall, Lawrence, KS

notes: This show was originally thought to have occurred on 23 November 1982, however a poster confirms it as this date

26 November 1981 - First Avenue Club, Minneapolis, MN
set 1: Romance / Sitting Still / Mystery To Me / Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars)
set 2: Ages Of You / There She Goes Again / Pretty Persuasion / Stumble / Permanent Vacation / Gardening At Night / 9-9 / Windout / That Beat / Wolves, Lower
encore: White Tornado / Radio Free Europe / Skank
notes: Set 1 is incomplete, probably missing the first six songs, as it seemed to be standard to play 10 songs per set.
From an interview by David Fricke with Peter Buck on 15 November 1990 taken from The Rolling Stone Files book (pg. 114): "Minneapolis was very good to us from the beginning. We played to twenty people on Thanksgiving 1981, and every one of them came up to us afterwards and invited us to their house for a party". From the tape I've heard I think he's accurate in his crowd count.
Despite Peter's fond memories, there still seems to be a lot of heckling occurring through the show. During 'Mystery To Me' Michael adds 'Go home yourself!' and also 'Trying to look so cool/I Bet you think the Clash are really boss'. Before 'Permanent Vacation' he adds 'We ain't faggots, we're Georgians'. During '9-9', half the audience seems to invade the stage, and some person can be heard howling into the microphone. When the song is over, Michael can be heard to say 'who the fuck are you?'. After 'Windout' he then says 'if anyone else wants to dance on stage you have to ask first'.
As if Skank wasn't an unusual song already, on this occasion Stipe's lyric consisted of the phrase 'The opposite of plethora is dearth' for the most of the song, but not before someone in the audience managed to scream into the microphone 'come to Ann Arbor, Michigan!'.
In an interview a year later, Michael and Peter claimed that they accidentally hurtled themselves towards the drums, resulting in the drums, Bill, Michael and Peter all falling 10 feet off the stage onto 3 unsuspecting people, who being hardcore, loved it. Michael then claimed they stole Peter's shoes and made him sign them. Whether this is true, or something made up during a dull interview you can decide. Unless it happened before the show started being recorded, it isn't audible to my ears!

R.E.M. were scheduled to play the venue with support from Tanzplagen at a later date, however because of the destruction of the club this did not happen. Mike later commented that one thing that did survive the fire was his bar tab.

14 January 1982 - 40 Watt Club, Athens, GA
notes: Benefit show for Tyrone's O.C.

22 January 1982 - Friday's, Greensboro, NC
set 1: Gardening At Night / 9-9 / Windout / Unknown / There She Goes Again / Sitting Still / That Beat / Pretty Persuasion / Mystery To Me / Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars)
set 2: Ages Of You / Catapult / Shaking Through / Laughing / Romance / Ghostriders In The Sky / Permanent Vacation / 1,000,000 / Wolves, Lower / Radio Free Europe
notes: The unknown song sounds to me like a cross between Talk About The Passion and Romance, with a bit of Pilgrimage thrown in. I've seen some lists claiming it's either an early version of Talk About The Passion or Pilgrimage, but personally I think it sounds nothing like them and is a song in its own right. This show can be found on the CD bootleg 'File Under Kudzu'. This show is listed on that boot as being at the 40 Watt Club in Athens in January 1983, however this is the correct date and location

23 January 1982 - Viceroy Park, Charlotte, NC

encore: White Tornado / Stumble / Ghost Riders In The Sky
notes: Paid attendance for the show was 298 (actual attendance probably 350-400) . . . I think this would have far exceeded the capacity of any place they had played (as headliners) prior to that. REM were paid $680 for that show (far more than they had ever been paid before I'm sure) and rider expenses were $10 (not counting room and board at my house) - Keith Stern

notes: Peter apparently was not too fond of the headlining act - "Boy, did I hate them. They were so rude to us. They made us move our drums closer to the front of the stage so we couldn't move. The cymbals kept hitting me in the back all night long. We just cooked, walked off stage and said, 'Follow that!'" - from It Crawled From The South (Marcus Gray, first edition, pg. 46)

10 September 1982 - Country Club, Reseda, CA
support: The Untouchables
supporting: The English Beat
notes: Following the upbeat Untouchables, R.E.M. came on and played some weird slow psychadelic music. The boos started by the 2nd song, when the crowd realized it wasn't just an opener, it was the act itself, and Michael Stipe was onstage acting rather gay. At first it was boos, but then in the third song it started with cups of beer and then various small objects were thrown at Stipe on the stage, with some striking him square on the cheek. Ouch! R.E.M. quickly left the stage, and shortly thereafter The English Beat came on and restored dance music to the hall

notes: While not sure of the exact date, it is thought this show is close to the Minneapolis show below.
From the Q magazine R.E.M. special (pg. 118): "'You would logically think it was a real hip, trendy club', says Berry, 'but you get there and it's a fried chicken restaurant. No stage. You do a soundcheck and there are families eating, and they're putting hot dog buns in their ears so they don't hear you'".
From Robert J Crisler: "The Drumstick was an interesting place. I remember when I was a kid, staying over at a friend's house, going to Mass the next day, and celebrating afterward with a pattie melt at the Drumstick when it was purely a chicken restaurant. The Lohmeiers had a kid, Tim, with stars in his eyes and a beer in his fist. He grew up, commandeered the place in the night hours, used the other definition of the name, and proceeded to make local history. Everyone who was anyone went through there. X, the Feelies, REM, Dwight Yoakam when he was too authentic for Nashville. The building was razed and replaced with a McDonald's around 1991. As Mills says, you might have thought it was hip and trendy, and it was, in a way ... the place was real and gritty in a way that kept the brainless at a distance. It didn’t have a stage, just a six-inch riser that was sort of a stage, set against the glass at the front of the restaurant. The place was done up in old brown drapes and wagon wheel chandeliers.
The best years of my life were spent in a chicken shack. I can only hope for more undiscovered chicken shacks."

set included: Radio Free Europe / Route 66 / Secret Agent Man / (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone / Pills
notes: The band didn't go down well at the military base, with shouts of 'you're gonna die, faggots!' coming from the audience. Stipe and Buck then played this up by 'kissing and rubbing butts'. At this point, tired of not being able to dodge incoming missiles, Bill left the stage, and Sara Romweber from Let's Active took over. Peter claims 'At the end, they booed so loud we came back and did an encore!'

7 June 1983 - Roxy, Lubbock, TX
support: Let's Active
set included: (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone
notes: From an eyewitness who was at this show: "I saw Michael and Peter before the show talking to a punker with a shaved head.
Let's Active opened to about 30 souls and people kept asking Mitch the name of the band between songs. Seems no one could understand it!
So when REM started playing they played very fast and VERY loud and Michael danced like a dervish and it was marvelous. So this punker guy starts slam dancing and people who weren't into it sort of moved away but he bumped into this cowboy's girlfriend and the guy started to lay into our punk friend. Well Peter saw this from the stage, put down his guitar mid-song, and jumped off the stage into the crowd to break the fight and presumably prevent the diminutive punk from getting his ass kicked. He told the astonished cowboy "This is a friend of mine. If you want to fight, wait till after the show and I will fight you outside." The cowboy cooled off and Peter got back up on stage and finished the set.
I partied with them after the show and told Peter I thought that was a cool thing to do. He just said it was no big deal." - C. Holbert

audience member: "Play something for Joe Santos!"
Stipe: "for Joe who?"
audience member: "Santos!"
Stipe: "ok, this song is for Joe Santos"
Laughing is played
Later the crowd shouts out for There She Goes Again until they finally give in and play the song (prefacing it with a great Moon River). By the time the encore starts Stipe gets totally fed up with people shouting out for songs:
audience: "shaking through!"
Stipe: "no no no no no no no!"
audience: "shaking through!!"
Stipe: "no no!"
audience: "shaking through!!!"

Later after We Walk is played...
Stipe: "wait a minute, we're gonna have a vote, we have two choices here, you can either hear Roadrunner or Eight Miles High...ok...wait..."

notes: A very unusual show, it sounds like they had a few too many pre show cocktails before going out, in particular I Got You Babe, with Mills and Stipe butchering the song is hilarious, and Six Stock Answers sounds (in my humble opinion) absolutely awful, which makes this show a must have!
The Community Trolls is comprised of Stipe and Matthew Sweet

notes: The following recount of this show by Robert Wiggin throws this setlist up in the air:
"My firends and i got put on the guest list for the show at Colby by the road crew cause they had worked helping them set up at the University of Maine the night before, and kinda hinted that they'd help out afterward the next night too. ;) The show at Colby began with Michael wearing a huge patch of gauze over his left eye, as he had somehow gotten injured after the previous night's show, i believe at some after show party. I believe he made mention that he had scratched his cornea.
Anyway, the crowd was much smaller than the night before, maybe 300 people at most, and not completely receptive to their music. There was one particular obnoxious drunk kid down front with a bottle of jack daniels, constantly yelling for them to "play some rock and rooooll", generally heckling and being disruptive. Mike Mills gestured for him to approach the stage, i guess asked the guy for his bottle, and took a huge pull from it. There were some conferences around the drum riser, and a song or two later, Michael took a running start from the back of the stage, and launched himself into the sparse crowd gathered down front. You know, being real rock and roll. They of course instantly parted, and Michael slammed into the floor hard, was probably a bit dazed, and i think was helped back up, and then backstage by some of the roadies.
At this point, the band just said screw it, and left the stage. Peter was down back to the left of the stage right afterward, looking for the drunk guy, and i heard him say, 'you just don't do that where we come from'.
I know they didn't do a full set, let alone come back on stage for encores."

notes: The gig took place, literally, in the basement hall of a country club. There were maybe a hundred people ([possibly more, but it was definitely a small crowd) gathered in front of the stage when Let's Active kicked off a great opening set. R.E.M hit the stage quite late, with Stipe again wearing the eye patch he had on the previous night, explaining and complaining that hospital personnel balked at giving him some medication for his injury because his appearance led them to conclude that he might abuse it. His hair was quite long and he was in camouflage jacket.
The show got under way, and by mid-point, the band was absolutely on fire. The audience gathered in a tight scrum in front of the stage and moved and rocked and swayed and pogoed as one! I remember Stipe leaning into the crowd wailing away on one tune.
After the show, I was standing in line for the rest room behind Peter Buck and remember telling him "That was the finest example of rock and roll as physical pleasure that I have ever experienced."
I still remember the show as absolutely powerful and astounding and beautiful. - Daniel Murray

notes: Eric Martin of The Neats guests on Lies, which is a Neats song from their "The Monkey's Head in the Corner of the Room" mini album from 1982.
The venue was originally listed as Colden Auditorium, however they actually played on the 4th floor of the Student Union, which is a 150-200 person capacity room used for events and local bands to play.
'Let's Active was originally billed as opening for REM but something happened and the Neats ended up playing. My pal who worked on the radio station was friends with Lets Active and was hoping to catch a ride with them (& REM) back into the city that night as they were going to attend another gig. Needless to say with no Lets Active..there was no ride. But he did get a chance to hang out with Mike Mills and Peter Buck beforehand and show them to local shopping strip a few blocks away. Once there, Mike ended up going to a crappy discount store and picked up a pair of new sneakers for $2 or something!' - Jeff Cuyubamba

review: This was a great show. They played in the War Memorial Auditorium (where the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra normally plays) so the acoustics were great. The band wasn't big enough yet to play the main Coliseum I guess. The encore numbers of Ghost Riders In The Sky and Carnival Of Sorts still stick out in my mind as highlights of the show - Tom Ivey

notes: Venue originally listed just as 'Numbers', but the original had closed down and 'Numbers 2' opened in its place. Michael Stipe was wearing a sport coat over and a colored T-shirt. Mike Mills mentioned at some point that when they came to play Houston in support of Murmur the previous year, they arrived in Houston to find the club they were scheduled to play that night closed and was out of business.
Before Pretty Persuasion, Stipe mentioned how drunk he was after they finished this song. During the song he had some kind of sticker or badge of some sort - and he tried to stick it on his sleeve while he was singing "put that on your sleeve" (he was unsuccessful because the sticker had lost its stick - not because he was too drunk)
The second encore was with the guitarist of the db's (the more famous guitarist who sang with the db's). They played a couple songs, ending with Boxcars. There was someone in the back of the room who kept yelling "Boxcars" every once in a while throughout the entire show, but he was the only person who yelled out a request at all. It seemed that Mike Mills talked the rest of the band into playing Boxcars for the last song (obviously in deference to the guy in the back of the crowd), and it was obvious that the db's guy was watching Peter Buck to see the chords played.

20 September 1984 - Hot Springs, AR
support: The dB's

21 September 1984 - War Memorial Auditorum, Nashville, TN
support: The dB's
set included: Moon River / We Walk / Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars)
notes: The venue had ramps that led up from the audience to the stage, and the crowd kept edging up it until 10-50 people were on stage with the band, and at one point a security guard was getting too rough with a girl in the crowd (the hassle had been going on between the crowd and security for a while) and the guitar drops out of the mix as Peter dashes over to the other side of the stage to push the security man away. Then the crowd roared it's approval. Then, as more and more fans were emboldened to take the stage, two small kids were in danger of getting squashed, and Mike pulled them out and up onto their side of the microphones, (all this during "We Walk") and got them to sing "up, up, up, up" in the fade out. Then someone got them some posters, and asked what they wanted to hear, and the band responded with a final encore of Carnival Of Sorts

encore 1: Moon River [twice] / Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars) / Little America
encore 2: Moral Kiosk / Talk About The Passion / Sitting Still / Pretty Persuasion
notes: Moon River is done twice. At the end of the first time (with one word left in the song) someone screams out "Fuck you!" to which Stipe yells back "If you don't like it, you can leave!". He and Mike immediately start over from the beginning. The same guy yells the same remark at the start of the second encore which Stipe replies curtly, "Fuck you, too!". There is another story that the fan was actually shouting, 'Fuck, YEAH!' in appreciation. Apparently the fan actually wrote a letter to the editor of one of the local papers hoping to clarify the incident.
